The Wellness Series

The Counseling Center is hosting drop-in virtual skills sessions on a wide range of topics (16 total!) to support your mental health and wellbeing. Click through the tabs below to find out more about information, including topic descriptions, Zoom links, and times.

Please know that these are skills sessions and not a therapy space. Due to the open and online nature of The Wellness Series, the sessions are not private or confidential though participants are encouraged to be respectful and mindful of each other and to practice discretion.

Advanced registration is not required. The sessions will close to new participants 15 minutes after it starts. The Wellness Series sessions are held only during Fall and Spring semesters and do not occur on university holidays or closures.

The Coping Skills Series will help participants develop a broad range of coping skills applicable to daily life, including managing stress, emotions, and uncertainty, as well as take a deeper dive into the practice of mindfulness.

First Monday of the Month: Mastering Mindfulness
Practicing mindfulness can help you manage your emotions, accept your reality, and stay grounded. Learn techniques to build your mindfulness skills and practice with brief mindful meditations.

Second Monday of the Month: Coping with Stress
Stress is a ubiquitous part of life. It has a bad reputation but it’s not always a bad thing. Join us to learn about the different types of stress, common reactions to stress, and best practices for coping with various stressors.

Third Monday of the Month: Surviving Difficult Emotions
Sometimes our emotions are so intense, it feels like they will never end. This session provides strategies to help understand our emotions and to cope with the associated discomfort and distress.

Fourth Monday of the Month: Taking Control of Your Thoughts
We’ll help you control your thoughts so they are not controlling you. This session will provide concrete techniques for recognizing, understanding, and altering unhelpful patterns of thinking.

This series is all about improving your academic performance with skills for success. We will help you get organized, get focused, and get motivated to take charge of your academic life.

First Tuesday of the Month of the Month: Time Management
This session will help you prioritize your obligations and organize your schedule so that you can take care of responsibilities in a timely manner and make time for self-care too!

Second Tuesday of the Month: Conquer Procrastination Now (Not Later)
Getting started is sometimes the hardest part. This session will explore underlying causes of procrastination and provide specific techniques to end the cycle of unrealistic expectations and avoidance that inhibits productivity.

Third Tuesday of the Month: Successful Study Skills
Not all study strategies are created equal! Learn about best practices for note-taking, paper-writing, studying, and more.

Fourth Tuesday of the Month: Pay Attention! Tips to Improve Focus
In a world full of distractions, it’s easy to lose focus. This session will provide helpful strategies to improve concentration and let go of distractions.

The Relationships and Communication series will focus on the ins and outs of relationships, from conflict to communication to connection. We will offer tips for healthy interactions and help you get the most out of your relationships.

First Wednesday of the Month: Effective Communication Skills
Communication is at the core of all of our relationships. Explore the different styles of communication, see which styles you use the most, and learn about best practices for communicating with the people around you.

Second Wednesday of the Month: Managing Conflict and Setting Boundaries
This session will describe healthy and unhealthy types of conflict, explore strategies for setting (and being on the receiving end of) boundaries, and provide best practices for conflict resolution.

Third Wednesday of the Month: Deepening Relationships through Vulnerability
If you are looking to have stronger and more authentic relationships, join us to explore how vulnerability can help you feel more deeply connected to the people in your life. This session is interactive and experiential.

Fourth Wednesday of the Month: Skills for Socializing
We often meet new people, but it's not always easy to make new friends. This session will focus on the ins and outs of making friends, including tips for approaching new people and progressing from acquaintances to friends. We know it's hard to put yourself out there so we'll also address ways to manage social discomfort.

The Resilience and Adaptability Series will explore the ways that our expectations and thoughts affect us in everyday life. We will highlight the ways our expectations may lead to difficulties and provide skills to become more resilient and face life head on!

First Thursday of the Month: Freedom from Perfectionism
This session will explore how perfectionism impacts students and provide strategies to help you embrace imperfection in yourself and others.

Second Thursday of the Month: Dealing with Disappointment
This session will help you manage life's frustrations and bounce back from disappointment when things don't go the way you want or expect. Coping skills like mindfulness, gratitude, and growth mindset will help you come to term with these feelings and find your "grit" to move forward.

Third Thursday of the Month: Navigating Change and Uncertainty
Every day we face uncertainty, whether brought on by big life transitions or everyday experiences. Adjusting to life’s changes and unknowns can be a challenge. This session provides strategies to help you cope with uncertainty and adapt to new experiences.

Fourth Thursday of the Month: Managing Imposter Syndrome
Learn what imposter syndrome is, why it occurs, and the skills to work on overcoming it, so you can go from self-doubt to confidence.
