Intern benefits include vacation and University holidays, health benefits, sick leave, professional leave to attend conferences, and access to computer time for statistical analysis and clerical support. Application
- Qualifications
-
Doctoral level status in counseling psychology or clinical psychology. (APA-accredited programs preferred)
- Completion of all required doctoral course-work, practica and comprehensive exams.
- Doctoral dissertation proposal approved prior to the starting date of the Intemship (July 1, 2008).
- Expected Dissertation Progress
- Our Internship Program places considerable emphasis on dissertation completion. We would like you to take full advantage of the Internship experience as it is designed to prepare you for a university counseling center and/or academic faculty position at the end of the year. These goals are more likely accomplished when your final dissertation oral is completed at or before the end of your internship In order to encourage this, we have introduced two provisions that are important for you and your advisor to consider:
-
Dissertation Proposal Approval: We ask that both you and your advisor sign a form indicating that you will have at least a committee-approved dissertation proposal before July 1st. This form is included as a part of the APPIC Application for Psychology Internship (AAPI).
-
Reduced Internship Stipend: In the event that you do not have an approved dissertation proposal by the start of the Internship, you will remain at 2/3 stipend until you have accomplished this step. At the time the dissertation proposal is approved by your committee you will move to full stipend support for the remainder of the internship.
- Application Procedure
- Application materials must be submitted by November 5, 2007. The following materials must be included:
-
Letter of interest.
- Current resume or vita.
- Three letters of recommendation from the following:
- Major academic advisor and/or dissertation supervisor.
- Two practicum supervisors familiar with candidate's applied performance.

- University of Maryland Application.
- Selection Process
- Selection of interns is made by the Training Committee comprised of the Director of Training, two or three Counseling Service staff members, and one intern. After the application deadline date, committee members review and independently rate applicants on the selection criteria. Applicants who remain under consideration following this process are selected and contacted for a telephone interview on or before December 15th. Telephone interviews are conducted in early January. Following the interviews, top-rated applicants are selected and ranked based on their initial ratings and telephone interview. Applicants who are no longer under consideration will be notified by letter at least 10 days prior to the rank order list submission date. The rank order submission date is February 6, 2008.
This internship agrees to abide by the APPIC policy that no person at this training facility will solicit, accept, or use any ranking-related information from any intern applicant.
- Notification Process
- Our notification procedure follows the match program guidelines established by the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Intemship Centers (APPIC). The results will be released on APPIC Match Day, February 25, 2008. Match policies can be found on the APPIC website, www.appic.org.
