Testing Program Schedules and Information
Below is a list of some of the more frequently utilized testing programs. Short descriptions are followed by links to scheduling and registration information. Many other testing programs are also administered through the Testing Office as needed. Please call (301) 314-7688 to request additional information about tests not shown below.
Test Descriptions, Information and Links

- ACT- Assessment (American College Testing)
- Measures skills in English, mathematics, social studies, and natural sciences to indicate how well a student will perform in college; used for college admittance.
2007-2008 Dates:October 27, December 8, February 9
Comments: Register four weeks in advance. Call ACT at 1-800-553-6244 to request registration forms or visit www.act.org/aap/.
- CLEP (College Level Examination Program)
- Series of 4 General Examinations and 29 Subject Examinations to choose from. Allows candidate to demonstrate knowledge in a subject, and possibly, to earn college credit. Credit policies vary for each school.

CLEP Scheduling and Registration.
- FLP (Foreign Language Placement)
- Please contact foreign language advisor for information about placement. The Testing Office no longer offers the foreign language placement exams.
- GMAT (Graduate Management Association Test)
- Test of developed abilities in business management used in determining acceptance to graduate programs in business and for management aptitude.
The GMAT is not offered at UMCP. To register for the GMAT, please go to www.mba.com or call 1-800-717-GMAT.
- GRE (Graduate Record Examination)
- Test designed to measure verbal, quantitative, and analytical abilities in a General Test and to measure knowledge and understanding of subject matter related to study in specific fields in the Subject Test. The GRE is required by many graduate and professional schools and fellowship sponsors as a supplement to under graduate records to assist in determining potential for graduate study. The General exam is a computer-based test only; the subject tests are given in a pencil-and-paper format.

2007-2008 Subject Test Dates: November 3, April 12
Comments: For the paper-and-pencil subject tests, register five weeks prior to test. Bulletins are available in the Graduate School Office, the Shoemaker Building, and the Lee Building.

- LSAT (Law School Admissions Test)
- Used to screen applicants to law schools. Measures ability and potential to succeed in law school as a supplement to undergraduate records.

Law School Admission Council and LSAT registration.
- MAT (Miller Analogies Test)
- The MAT provides information to support application for admission to graduate study or for financial aid in graduate institutions. It requires the solution of a series of intellectual problems stated in analogy form. Questions cover broadly the areas of science, mathematics, social studies, literature and general vocabulary and information. It does not require specialty in any field.

- MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test)
- MCAT general information and registration.
- PCAT (Pharmacy College Admission Test)
- Measures aptitude and knowledge of pharmacy. Used as an aid in determining admission to professional school.

- PRAXIS (National Teacher Examination)
- The Praxis I Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST) are designed to measure basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. Praxis I exams are offered in computer-based format. Computer-based format is offered year-round in the Testing Office in the Counseling Center at the University of Maryland, College Park. Call 301-314-0319 to schedule.
The Praxis II Subject Tests are offered in pencil-and-paper format on specific dates.
Please visit www.ets.org/praxis/registerto register for paper-based PPST and Praxis II Subject Tests using a credit or debit card. To register and pay by check, money order, or U. S. Postal Service money order, download and complete the Paper-Based Test Registration Form and submit it to the address on the form with payment. The information required for the registration can be found on the Praxis website: www.ets.org/praxis. For further information on Praxis, call ETS: 1-800-772-9476.

UMCP Computer-Based Testing page.
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
- Evaluates the English proficiency of people whose native language is not English . Uses a multiple-choice format for listening comprehension, structure and written expression, and vocabulary and reading comprehension. Required by schools, institutions, government agencies and scholarship programs where English is the language of instruction.
