The Students of Color Walk-In Hour Program is a direct service provided by the Counseling Service specifically designed for Black/African American, Hispanic/Latina(o), Asian/Asian American and Native American students. The program was created to meet the immediate emotional-social and educational-career needs of students of color on a walk-in basis. One of the objectives of the program is to make our services more attractive and available to students of color who may otherwise avoid counseling if asked to schedule an appointment. Offering the Students of Color Walk-In Hour Service is attractive because it does not require a student to schedule an appointment in advance. Many referrals are made by faculty and staff, who refer students directly from their offices to the Counseling Center. It is not unusual for a representative from these offices to escort a student to the Counseling Center.
The Students of Color Walk-In Hour operates Monday through Friday from 3 to 4 p.m.. During this time, a counselor is available to meet with any student of color who is self-referred or referred by a member of the campus community. Another feature that makes this service attractive to students of color is that it is staffed by psychologists, counselors and doctoral interns who represent visible minority racial/ethnic groups.
