Miller Analogies Test Information Sheet

The MAT is a high-level mental ability test which requires the solution of a series of intellectual problems stated in the form of analogies, most verbal. The analogies tap such fields as science, mathematics, social sciences, literature, general vocabulary, and general information. An examinee is not expected to be a specialist in any of these fields. The test takes fifty minutes.

Examples

  1. SALK : POLIO :: (a. Jenner, b. Sabin, c. Lister, d. Pasteur) : SMALLPOX
  2. log100 : 2 :: ln(e) : (a.0, b.e, c.1, d. no answer)
  3. McKINLEY : NORTH AMERICA :: ELBRUS : (A. Spain, b. South America, c. Europe, d. Soviet Union)
  4. GENGHIS KHAN : MONGOLIA :: HANNIBAL : (A. Rome, b. Greece, c. Egypt, d. Carthage)

WHO SHOULD TAKE THE TEST

The primary purpose of the Miller Analogies Test is to provide information to support your application for admission to graduate study or for financial aid in graduate institutions. Ordinarily, you will want the score sent only to the appropriate administrator in institutions which require that you submit a score for the MAT. Check the requirements in the catalog of the graduate schools in which you are interested.

REPORTING OF TEST SCORES

An Examinee's Report with your score on it will be returned to you about three weeks after the test date. This will be your personal record and you should keep it for later reference, if needed. All test scoring is done by the Psychological Corporation in San Antonio, Texas.

At the time of the examination you may list one to three addresses to which an official transcript of your score will be sent. These reports are included in the test fee and will be sent out about three weeks after the test. You must know the correct, complete addresses when you come to take the test.

NOTE: You are entitled to these three reports only if you specify the name and addresses when you take the test; all subsequent reports are fifteen dollars each, payable only by money order. These are sent out by The Psychological Corporation upon receipt of a written request from you conforming to guidelines in the MAT Candidate Information Booklet or receipt of a Score Report Request Form, either of which are available at the Testing Office.

RETESTING

When it is found that an examinee has taken the test more than once within twenty-four months, both current and previous scores are reported. This does not mean that taking the test more than once is forbidden, but only that full disclosure of all scores will be made. In general, retesting is considered appropriate when previous testing occurred more than two years earlier; it will be necessary if the initial testing occurred more than five years ago, since a test score older than five years will not be reported. If you have taken the MAT on or since September 1, 1991, you must bring an admission ticket issued by the Psychological Corporation with you to the retest administration. You will not be re-tested without it.
