CLEP Information

for University of Maryland, College Park Students

CLEP (College Level Examination Program) Tests are one way students can earn college credit by examination. Registration materials may be picked up in the Shoemaker Building, Room 2112 or in the main lobby. A registration form is also available online. These materials should answer most of your questions. Here are some other questions students often ask about CLEP:

Q: What is the test code number for the University of Maryland, College Park?
A: The test code number for UMCP is 5814.

Q: If I want to take a CLEP Examination at UMCP, where do I send (or take) my registration form and fees?

Q: What are the registration deadlines for CLEP?
A: There are no specific deadlines. Reservations for testing are taken in the order they are received until the date is filled. Please reserve early!

Q: When will the credits for CLEP show up on my transcript?
A: If you passed the test and requested at the time of testing that your scores be sent to UMCP, credits should be posted within two months. However, you must matriculate at College Park before requesting the posting of credits. Posting will not be done until you have established a transcript, i.e., earned credit through regularly taken courses.

Q: Can I take CLEP exams in my senior year?
A: Credits for CLEP exams will not be granted as part of your last 30 credit hours unless the Dean of the college in which you are majoring has approved it.

NOTES: If you are unsure as to what CLEP tests will suit your needs and requirements, consult your academic advisor before choosing an exam.

Students may not receive credit both for CLEP courses and for equivalent UMCP courses or transfer courses. CLEP credit will be deleted in such cases. Applicable scores for a particular examination are those in effect when a student takes the exam.
