Writing Skills: Language counselors provide individual appointments, workshops, multimedia resources, conversation partners, and credit courses to help you maximize your skills in: Listening, Note-taking, Speaking, Interviewing, Presentations, Reading Comprehension, Speed-reading, Grammar, Writing, Organization, NTE preparation, TSWE preparation. ESOL Conversation Group: International students meet weekly for an hour and a half with a volunteer group leader to discuss U.S. values and customs, university life, current events, and other topics of interest. The program is designed to help international students expand their vocabulary, improve pronunciation, and increase their speaking and listening abilities. Dissertation Support Group: Support groups meet in the Learning Assistance Service of the Counseling Center, Shoemaker Building. Groups meet Biweekly throughout the calendar year. They are free to all UMCP graduate students who are working on either a master's thesis or a doctoral dissertation. College-Bound Program: This transition program is for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors who want to know more about the study skills, resources, and actions needed to succeed in college. Math Learning Skills: The Math Learning Program is based on the factors that influence math learning, namely the affective, behavioral and cognitive processes. Students who seek help for improving math learning skills are assessed to determine what is blocking or preventing them from learning math. Once the problem is identified, students are provided with resources, exercises and strategies designed to improve math learning. Once students accomplish this task, they are provided with math resources to reinforce the math skills needed for their particular math course. This is done by using resources for basic math skills up to resources for calculus. Returning Students: The Returning Students Program of the Counseling Center is designed for individuals who are 25 years of age or over, have experienced a break in their education, and would like to return to or begin college study.
