University of Maryland Counseling Center

Internship

LAS offers an opportunity for graduate and upper-level undergraduate students to learn about the academic services offered through a comprehensive counseling center and the primary responsibilities of an academic skills counselor/learning specialist. Interns participate in projects related to student retention, services for at-risk populations or learning in specific content areas (i.e. math learning). Interns will learn about techniques used by counselors to help students take responsibility for learning, develop classroom and study skills and to organize course material for learning.

Those interested in an internship should schedule an appointment to meet with an LAS staff member to discuss specific learning goals and the activities/projects to reach those goals. An LAS staff member will meet regularly with the intern to provide training and supervision. Interns should expect to devote at least 3 hours per week working in LAS as an intern throughout the semester in addition to regular meetings with the supervising counselor.

An independent study course can be designed if the internship is not already a component of the intern's course of study.
