2011-2012 GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS

The Counseling Center offers a variety of graduate assistantships. In LAS, most assistantships are 10 month, 20 hours per week. Math Learning Assistant

Duties: Counsel or instruct students taking developmental math, hold extra help and/or skill-building sessions in mathematics, provide support for students with mathematics learning disabilities, conduct learning strategy workshops, interface with instructors and academic advisors.

Qualifications: Graduate student in mathematics education, science education, statistics, or mathematics. Interest in helping college students improve their math skills and learn how to learn mathematics.

Peer Programs Coordinator

Duties: Coordinate peer academic support programs. Publicize and market programs; select and train student leaders and volunteers; arrange room locations; coordinate group members or peer partners; collect program data; conduct learning strategy workshops; serve as a liaison to other departments and offices on campus; plan social events; and assist with campus outreach events.

Qualifications: Graduate student in college student personnel, education, counseling, higher education, or human development. Interests in helping students achieve academic success. Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, with a strong customer service orientation. Background in academic support programs or peer leadership groups a plus.

ESOL Conversation Program Assistant

Duties: Coordinate speaking program for international students wishing to improve their English conversation skills. Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers for speaking partners or conversation groups. Match participants with volunteers, schedule rooms, trouble-shoot when difficulties arise. May work individually with international students on written English skills.

Qualifications: Graduate student, preferably in TESOL, second language acquisition, international education or counseling, with strong administrative and organizational skills, knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, website management, and strong customer service orientation. Commitment to international students is essential.

Retention Initiatives Assistant

Duties: Support for the Achieving College Excellence (ACE) program including individual academic counseling for ACE students and/or teaching a learning strategy course; coordinate and conduct learning strategy workshops; serve as a liaison to other departments and offices on campus.

Qualifications: Prefer doctoral level graduate student in mathematics education, college student personnel or higher education. Strong administrative skills with the ability to relate effectively with diverse groups. Previous experience with student achievement and/or academic support programs. Background in math or sciences preferred but not essential.
